Portugal has a good road network made up of Motorways (AE), Main Itineraries (IP), Complementary Itineraries (IC), National Roads (EN) and Municipal Roads.
There are two types of Motorways: – traditional ones with toll booths, where payment is made in cash or by bank card. These motorways also have Via Verde, a teletoll system that allows payment by bank debit, and which is only intended for those in possession of a Via Verde identifier, previously purchased at the respective points of sale (www.viaverde.pt).
– and those with exclusively electronic tolls, in which the collection system is exclusively electronic, with the passage of vehicles being detected by the gantries at the beginning of these roads, which are identified with the reference “Electronic toll only”. For information on covered roads and payment methods, see www.portugaltolls.com.
At airports, at international railway transport terminal stations, and in major locations, there are driverless car rental services.
For drivers with mobility difficulties, or who prefer, it is possible to rent vehicles with automatic transmission or adapted.
To rent a vehicle you need:
– be over 21 or 25 years old, depending on the rental conditions of each company;
– present identification (identity card for EU citizens or valid passport for other nationalities);
– driver’s license valid for more than one year.
To rent a car, you can check the rent-a-car list on the Turismo de Portugal website or contact your travel agency.
Regular bus services connect all cities, towns and main locations in Portugal, and it is also possible to reach the country by bus via international routes.
See detailed information about routes, timetables and prices at www.rede-expressos.pt and www.flixbus.pt.
